On Star Trek Discovery (Season One)

I've been putting off writing this for months, because I couldn't figure out what to say. CBS's expansion of the Star Trek universe is certainly divisive, to say the least: there are those who laud its grittier aesthetic, its more adult characters, its design expansion and its storyline, while some becry a perceived departure from […]

TV rundown 2015

Here's a brief reaction to some of this year's best new TV, in no particular order. I've spoilt the frak out of them, too, so don't read if you don't want to know what happens. There are a number of well-received shows I haven't gotten around to yet. If you're a fan of something not on this list, #sorrynotsorry.

Stargate Atlantis: The Queen

Last night's episode of Stargate Atlantis was the eighth in the final season, and saw a whole new role for Rachel Luttrell.

Belkin F5D7632 Wireless ADSL Modem/Router

I bought this router to replace my faithful old Netgear DG834G that our ADSL ISP suspected was contributing to some ridiculous loss of sync issues. It was direct off-the-shelf and I hadn't read any reviews, but knowing to stay away from Linksys and being careful not to go with the same brand that might have […]

Review: The Andromeda Strain

I got a sneak peak tonight at the upcoming re-make of Robert Wise's film adaptation of "The Andromeda Strain" by Michael Crichton. This new adaptation is brought to us in mini-series form as has become popular with producers lately and is well worth a look when it gets a full release in the UK. It's already aired in Australia and will be on US TV later this month.

Stop, Reboot Time!

I've been following with great interest a series of articles centred around what has become one of the most ubiquitous features of modern OS design: the shutdown dialog.

I Heart Battlestar Galactica

I've been a loyal fan of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica since the 2003 miniseries, and it just goes from strength to strength. After a very "different" few episodes centred around a planetary settlement and subsequent enemy occupation (which sent the show's focus plummeting down from space), the stories following the inevitable "escape" have been incredibly […]

Three point Two Seconds My Ass

So in this week's episode of Stargate SG-1, "Insiders", the writers/producers decided to change the duration of a Stargate trip again. Throughout the original movie and the early years of the show, it clearly takes travellers and most obviously MALPs 8 or 9 seconds to get from the SGC gate room to the other end. […]

Evolution Of The Web Browser

So I wasn't immensely impressed with my newly installed copy of Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2. It's shiny and nice, and has a few nice features like tabs and feed support, and it's attempted to make security better. All good things, you'd think…

Enterprise Finale "These Are The Voyages"

I enjoyed this episode and agree that it was a good end to the show. If anything, though, I felt a little cheated that the TNG characters had 'stolen' the last episode of a four year saga from us — I think I'd have felt more comfortable if B&B had let our heroes finish the […]
